BGPI (Biology and Genetics of Plant-Parasites interactions Research Unit – Cirad-INRA-SUPAGRO (Montpellier, France) & Cirad (Guadeloupe, French West Indies).
The BGPI partner is located in Montpellier, France, but includes a subsidiary in Guadeloupe. This research unit aims at increasing knowledge of biology, population dynamics and population genetics of plant pathogens with a view to proposing rational control strategies. It develops 3 main research areas:
1. Systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography
2. Population genetics and ecology
3. Integrative ecology of population-environment systems
BGPI is also involved in quarantine services (sugarcane, banana and yam), in the frame of the BRC Tropical plants.
This partner has expertise and skills in plant pathology, epidemiology, population genetics and agronomy. It manages sugarcane and yam quarantine germplasm collections of several hundreds of genotypes each, comprising the main cultivated species and wild relatives.
The BGPI Quarantine activities include disease indexing (sugarcane, banana, yam), a transit centre (sugarcane, yam) and variety sanitation (sugarcane, yam).
Facilities include molecular biology and in vitro culture laboratories, greenhouses, controlled-conditions growth chambers.
